IEEE Fellows Scoring
and Workflow Application
Client Introduction
Originally an acronym for the
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, IEEE is
the world's leading professional association for the
advancement of technology.
Through its
global membership, IEEE is a leading authority on areas
ranging from aerospace systems, computers and
telecommunications to biomedical engineering, electric power
and consumer electronics among others.
Members rely on
IEEE as a source of technical and professional information,
resources and services.
To foster an
interest in the engineering profession, IEEE also serves
student members in colleges and universities around the
world.
Project Overview
PWI was selected to develop the IEEE
Fellows Scoring Program Enhancement for Corporate Activities
(“The IEEE Scoring Application”). The program is an
integrated component of the Enhanced IEEE Fellow Nomination
Process and enables judges to enter and analyze scores for
multiple nominees within a single view as opposed to the
single nominee entry capability that existed in the Lotus
Notes based application previously in production. The
application end-users (judges) desired a familiar interface
with “spreadsheet” type functionality and look and feel.
Improved
ease-of-use, efficiency and flexibility comprised the
primary business case factors that drove the software
development initiative. The new program also ensures
improved fairness and accuracy in the Fellows candidates
scoring process.
PWI was selected
to provide software design (requirements and technical
specification), development, testing, and Quality Assurance
and documentation services.
Technology Summary
The solution was
implemented as a three tier (Front End, Middle Tier and
Database) Java-based application supporting the BEA WebLogic application server platform. The
Sun Java Studio Enterprise, an integrated development
environment (IDE) built on the popular NetBeans platform was
also used.
The Front End of
the application is browser-based and utilizes Java Server
Faces (JSF) and Asynchronous JavaScript and XML (Ajax).
Browser support includes: 6.0+ for Windows, Firefox 1.5+
(Mac & Windows), Netscape 7.2 (Mac and Windows), and Safari
(Mac). The Java Spring framework (a full-stack Java/JEE
application framework) and JSF beans and Hibernate for the
Middle Tier were used. We leveraged the existing Oracle 9i
HTMLDB for the Database tier.
Software design (requirements
and technical specification), development, testing, QA, UAT
and production rollout was completed on time (within nine
months) and within budget.
