Tapping PWI Expertise in the Development
of a Security Services Application
As a company that defines itself as "leading the
communications revolution" Lucent deliberately puts itself
under great pressure to develop innovative solutions for its
clients. Recently this relentless drive to lead the
communications industry brought Lucent to PWI for the
purpose of assisting Lucent’s own world-renowned development
team in the creation a network security application.
The objective of this collaboration was to
design a user-friendly tool that Lucent could use to
formulate, augment and monitor security services and
activities for their network clients.
Given that each Lucent client has unique
requirements for security access, and that these
requirements change regularly, PWI chose to handle this
highly varied virtual environment by implementing a
comprehensive security mechanism based on a Profile/Policy
paradigm. All security decisions (such as access and scope
of access) relied on that paradigm. Profiles handled
individual users and user groups while policies handled
resources. This approach, combined with some PWI proprietary
know-how, resulted in a security application that could
seamlessly manage network and information access across
Lucent’s highly varied clients in real-time. Sophisticated
monitoring and reporting was also added so that
administrators could evaluate access patterns of users to
improve the effectiveness of their security policies.
