ThreatSentry Protects Microsoft® IIS — Demonstrates Strong Intrusion Detection and Prevention Capabilities in Independent Evaluation

RED BANK, NJ – March 11, 2004 – Privacyware, the leader in advanced threat prevention and security intelligence solutions, today announced that ThreatSentry, its Intrusion Detection and Prevention System for Microsoft IIS web servers, scored high marks in an evaluation conducted by Toronto-based Network Security Consulting firm Merlin Systems. Released today, the report presents an overview of ThreatSentry, the details of the test case and the test results.

“We installed ThreatSentry on a typical Windows server with IIS 5.0 installed and all current security patches,” said Merlin Systems Director, Jonathan Herman. “We then attacked IIS with a variety of dangerous exploits such as the RDS Vulnerability, CGI Exploit, and Access Point Application Compromise, among others. As our report indicates, ThreatSentry demonstrated impressive and unique intrusion prevention capabilities. We’ve never seen a more effective, versatile, elegant, or easier-to-use complement to software or device-based firewalls.”

ThreatSentry is an advanced behavioral system that combines machine and mentored learning capabilities, a knowledge-base of documented exploits, and an analytic model specifically designed for IIS, to continuously collect, analyze and organize server events into an evolving baseline of acceptable activity. Each server connection is compared against this baseline to identify and take action against any activity falling outside of trusted parameters.

Implemented as an IIS ISAPI filter and manifested as a snap-in to the Microsoft Management Console (MMC), ThreatSentry is designed to protect network weak points created by lapses in patch management, configuration errors, and the use of new and progressive attack techniques. Pricing for the Small Business Edition of ThreatSentry is $99. The standard version, which supports centralized network installation and policy management, and other features, is also available. ThreatSentry supports the Windows 2000/2003 and IIS 5.0/6.0 platforms.

“We are pleased with the outcome of the Merlin report, as it confirms the results of our internal tests as well as the feedback we have received from customers since we released ThreatSentry last summer,” commented Privacyware CEO, Greg Salvato.  “Privacyware is dedicated to developing enterprise security solutions, like ThreatSentry, that extend the protection capabilities of conventional rule, signature and policy based systems and make the lives of system administrators and security professionals easier.”

A free 30-day trial version of ThreatSentry software is also available for download: http://www.privacyware.com/download.html.
